A suspected pedophile who was who was held by relatives of an 11-year-old schoolgirl while attempting to meet the girl last week, has appeared in court charged with one count of sexual grooming.

29-year-old Neil Bissessar was been remanded in custody pending a criminal record trace, after appearing in the Chaguanas Magistrates' Court today.

The charge, which is under the Children's Act, was laid indictably.

He had earlier picked up the girl in his taxi as she left school and on the way to drop her off, and allegedly asked her for her number.

According to the mother's account, the child said she was the only one in the car and that she was frightened so she gave the man her number.

The girl then told her mother what had happened and her mother took her phone.

When he messaged, the mother, pretending to be the girl, invited him over to their home where relatives held the man and tied his hands and feet before he was handed over to Chaguanas police.
