Roopnarine gets second term as Princes Town Regional Corporation Chairman

Councillor Gowrie Roopnarine was elected as the chairman of the Princes Town Regional Corporation for a second term, earlier this morning.

The swearing-in ceremony also saw former education minister, Clifton DeCoteau, taking the oath as an alderman, and being elected as the Corporation’s Vice-Chairman.

Smooth start to Voting Day

Some 1,079,969 people are eligible to vote today…

They will be choosing their local government representatives at the 2,107 polling stations within the 1,530 polling divisions throughout the country.

Initial reports suggest a smooth start to voting today.


TTPS: Avoid elections-related offences

As the day for local government elections gets closer, the police service is reminding citizens to respect each other’s constitutional right to campaign for—and support the political party of—their choice.

The TTPS’ Sergeant Ashraf Ali is encouraging citizens to get familiar with the Representation of the People Act, which documents the various offences that should not be committed during election time.

Schools closed for local government elections

The Education Ministry has advised that there will be no school on Monday December 2nd, the day of the local government elections.

According to a release issued by the ministry, the Chief Education Officer explains, this is to facilitate the elections process.

Some schools are used as voting centres.

Schools principals are advised that school will resume, as normal, on Tuesday November 3rd.

De­spite lo­cal gov­ern­ment re­form be­ing a 2015 elec­tion promise of the Peo­ple’s Na­tion­al Move­ment, the leg­is­la­tion that would give more au­ton­o­my to mu­nic­i­pal cor­po­ra­tions will not be ready ahead of the De­cem­ber 2 Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Elec­tions.

EBC: “Preliminary Voters Lists are ready…”

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) is encouraging all political parties and registered electors (in Trinidad) to examine the Preliminary List of Electors, which has been sent to each of the polling divisions, for the upcoming Local Government Elections.

According to an official notice issued by the EBC and signed off by the Chief Election Officer, all qualified electors are urged to make an earnest effort to examine the List to ensure that their names and addresses are correctly recorded.
