Feeles: Men and boys must be encouraged too

As the country continues to observe International Men’s Day this week, President of the Single Fathers Association, Rhondall Feeles, is encouraging men to stop neglecting their physical health and mental wellness issues.

The SFATT president says men tend see themselves as invincible, hiding any signs of physical weakness, and keeping their mental troubles and issues locked deep inside, to their own detriment.

INTERNATIONAL: Chile's cost of living protests take deadly toll

The number of people killed in violent protests against rising living costs in Chile has risen to 11, Santiago Governor Karla Rubilar said on Monday.

At least five of those killed died after looters torched a garment factory near the capital.

The military and police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters and a curfew was imposed in major cities.

A state of emergency already in place in Santiago is to be extended to cities in the country's north and south.

INTERNATIONAL: Turkey launches offensive in northern Syria with air strikes

Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees.

According to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), civilian areas came under attack from Turkish planes.

Turkish ground forces have also been massing on the border.

Four arrested in Laventille police/army exercise

A joint police/army anti-crime operation was carried out in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday 9th January, 2019, which resulted in the arrest of four persons wanted in connection with recent shootings and woundings and on outstanding warrants, police said in a statement.

The exercise, under ACP (Ag.) Radcliffe Boxill, was executed in the Besson Street Police District and targeted the Laventille area, including Boxhill Trace and Wharton Street. 

During the exercise officers also carried out general searches for arms and ammunition and other illegal items.

Don't be too alarmed if you hear sounds of gunfire coming from within army camps next week

The Ministry of National Security is advising that Phase II of the international military exercise entitled “Exercise Tradewinds 2017” will be conducted in Trinidad and Tobago from June 13 – 17, 2017.

Phase I is being held in Barbados from June 06 – 12, 2017.

Tradewinds is a multi-national maritime security and disaster response exercise in the Caribbean.

Traffic disruptions expected for military funeral of late Sgt Guevara

The military is warning of traffic disruptions with the funeral service for the late Sergeant Christian Guevara of the Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard on Saturday 29 April 2017.

The funeral takes place at 10:00 am at the Open Bible Standard Church, Palo Seco.

A Military Procession will then follow into the Los Bajos Public Cemetery located on the S.S Erin Road, Palo Seco.

The military said in a statement that this procession may result in minor traffic delays for commuters along S.S Erin Road between the hours of 12 noon and 2:00 pm.
