There are reports that more than a dozen voters with poll cards were turned away from the polls on Monday—in the marginal electoral district of California-Point Lisas—when they went to cast ballots at the Couva East Secondary School.
Couva South MP, Rudranath Indarsingh, said he got several calls that there have been a number of election discrepancies.
Indarsingh said a woman in possession of a poll card was told that her name was not on the list. He said the woman insisted that they look for her name on the binder until she was allowed to vote.
Caroni Central MP Dr Bhoe Tewarie made a passionate plea for Government to pay the country’s ageing cane farmers who he claimed are owed millions of dollars before they die one-by-one.
The committee was told that $5 million was allocated in the 2019 budget for the farmers of which $1.7 million had been spent.
Couva South MP and former Sugar Workers Union head, Rudranath Indarsingh is calling on the prime minister to clarify his statement in Parliament where he said no money would be paid to the former Caroni sugar workers from the European Union grant.
The EU grant was given to this country following the closure of Caroni 1975 Limited, to fund a diversification process.
Sugar workers maintained that they were entitled to some of that money and despite delays and some controversy over the fund, one tranche of the payment was made to the workers.
